More schooling options needed

A one-size-fits-all approach does not seem to be suitable for Malaysia as the Government needs to be able to cater to the different communities within the country.
MALAYSIANS should have more schooling options within the education system, said Taylor’s Education Group School Division president B.K. Gan.
He said a one-size-fits-all approach was not suitable for a country as diverse as Malaysia.
“We need to be able to cater to the different communities within Malaysia, (such as) the urban and the rural, and that’s a reason why options are important.
“The British Council says that by 2020, two billion people will be learning and speaking English.
“If we are to move into (becoming) a developed nation by 2020 and want Malaysians to be able to communicate and do business in the world, the options then become quite obvious – that one of the languages that must be made available to Malaysians is English,” he said.
Gan was speaking as one of the panellists at The Star’s Cafe Latte chat on “Should English-medium schools be offered as an option?” here.
The chat was moderated by Education Editor Chelsea L.Y. Ng.
The chat series serves as a platform for invited guests to share their views on current issues.
Gan said that in terms of deciding on education policy, the country should consider the sort of workforce it would need by 2020.
“China is opening up.
“That’s a powerhouse – they have over 100,000 native English speakers in the country just to teach them English.
“South Korea has opened up and there are many South Korean students here to learn English.
“The whole world is opening up to one common language,” he said.
Federation of National Writers Association of Malaysia (Gapena) general-secretary Borhan Md Zain said the setting up of English-medium schools was not feasible – partly due to the lack of qualified teachers.
“It was reported that 70% of English language teachers right now are still not ready to teach English.
“And the remaining 30%? They are probably teaching at residential or premier schools but the rest of them still need help.
“There is a need for proper teaching techniques and facilities (in schools) before we can start thinking of introducing (something new).
“If they (teachers) cannot communicate well in English in the first place, how are they going to teach English?” he asked at the session.
The other panellists were Parent Action Group for Education Malaysia chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim and Monash University Sunway Campus lecturer and founder of Parents for English-medium National-type Schools (PENS) Assoc Prof Dr Lan Boon Leong.

ASSEN (Holland): Italian riding legend Valentino Rossi ended a winless run of nearly three years when he won the Dutch MotoGP at Assen yesterday.
The 34-year-old – who had not won since the Malaysian MotoGP in October 2010 – came home clear on his Yamaha ahead of Honda’s Marco Marquez while Briton Cal Crutchlow, who had been on pole, was third on a Yamaha works bike.
Rossi’s team-mate defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo was also a winner yesterday as his decision to ride despite undergoing early on Friday an operation on a broken collarbone paid off as he finished fifth.
The 26-year-old lost only minimal ground in the world title race as series leader Dani Pedrosa, who had never won this race, finished just a place ahead of him.
Pedrosa extended his lead by just two points to nine over Lorenzo, while Rossi is fifth 51 points adrift of the leader after posting his 80th win in the category and 106th in all disciplines leaving him 16 short of all-time overall win leader compatriot Giacomo Agostini.
Pedrosa swooped to take the lead on the first corner in front of Marquez and Stefan Bradl, while Crutchlow had a terrible start and dropped to fifth.
Lorenzo had moved from 12th to seventh by the end of the first of 26 laps, while Rossi was in third passing Bradl to sit behind the Honda duo of Pedrosa and Marquez.
Bradl was in freefall, being passed by Crutchlow and then Lorenzo, who had soared to fifth place after just two laps and performed a superb inside passing manoeuvre on Crutchlow to go fourth with 23 laps to go.
Rossi was also in super form passing Marquez after four laps and set off in pursuit of Pedrosa.
The Italian’s devoted fans roars reached fever pitch as the rider nicknamed “The Doctor” passed Pedrosa to lead a race for the first time this season.

No US men in third round at Wimbledon for the first time in 101 years

THE United States suffered their worst men’s singles performance at Wimbledon for over a century when they were left without a player in the third round for the first time since 1912.
World number one Novak Djokovic delivered the fatal blow by beating the last American man standing, world number 156 Bobby Reynolds, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-1 in the second round.
In all, 11 American men started out in the main draw on Monday but their only two seeded players - John Isner and Sam Querrey were out by Wednesday.
Isner, the 18th seed, retired with an injury from his second round match against France’s Adrian Mannarino.
Querrey, the 21st seed, lost a five-setter in the first round to Australia’s Bernard Tomic.
By Thursday, only James Blake, Denis Kudla and Reynolds were left.
It was a challenge too far as Blake fell to Tomic and Kudla was put out by Ivan Dodig of Croatia.
So it’s been almost 10 years and now 39 Grand Slams since the US was able to salute a men’s trophy winner at the majors.
Pete Sampras was the last American man to win Wimbledon when he captured his seventh title in 2000.
Andy Roddick, the last US man to lift a major at the 2003 US Open, suffered three heartbreaking Wimbledon final losses to Roger Federer in 2004, 2005 and 2009.
Since then, the only American man to trouble the All England Club engravers was Isner whose name now adorns a plaque on Court 18 to recognise his winning role in the world’s longest tennis match in 2010.
It’s all a far cry from the glory years of Sampras and Andre Agassi, the 1992 champion, three-time winner John McEnroe (1981, 1983 and 1984) and double champion Jimmy Connors (1974 and 1982).
Isner has still to get beyond the second round at Wimbledon despite having the killer-serve which should, in theory, ease his path through the draw.
“I was the highest seeded player on a surface that I’m tough to beat on, given how well I can serve and how much I can hold serve,” said Isner.
“I had a good chance to go pretty far here. My deal is just as long as I can get through the first couple of rounds I feel like I always get better as events go on.”
Querrey’s best Wimbledon performance remains a last-16 run in 2010.
Ryan Harrison, 21, who was another first round victim.
Harrison won his first tour-level match at just 15 and cracked the top 100 as an 18-year-old in July, 2011.
His ranking rose to 43 in July last year but his progress has stalled and he went into Wimbledon at 84 in the world.
Reynolds believes there is hope and that there is some promising young talent in the college system and in the early stages of ATP careers.
“You have guys like Jack Sock and obviously Steve Johnson and Kudla, guys like that, that have huge weapons,” said Reynolds.
“They’ve got huge serves, huge forehands. Obviously, it’s a matter of harnessing those, cutting down on the errors, and using that.
“I do see those guys as having top potential. Isner had a freak accident. He could have gone a long way. Querrey had tough trial with Tomic.
“A lot of guys are coming up. They’re knocking on the doorstep of top 100.”

A close shave for Lee

PETALING JAYA: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei survived a nerve-wracking encounter against China’s Wang Zhengming before moving into the second round of the Indonesian Open in Jakarta.
The 30-year-old Chong Wei, seeking his fourth title of the year – after the Korean, Malaysian and India Opens – won 20-22, 21-4, 22-20 yesterday.
There was also some good news for the troubled world No. 3 pair of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong when they defeated Indonesia’s Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki-Hendra Gunawan 21-15, 21-11 in the first round.
Their reward is a second round date with another Indonesian pair – Alvent Yulianto-Markis Kido.
The wretched form of world No. 7 Hoon Thien How-Tan Wee Kiong continued as they lost to the scratch Indonesian pair of Andrei Adistia-Gideon Markus Fernaldi despite taking the first game.
Thien How-Wee Kiong, who have yet to get past the quarter-final stage of a tournament this year, went down 21-10, 18-21, 15-21.
The day, however, belonged to Chong Wei.
“Zhengming played his best game and put me under a lot of pressure early on,” said Chong Wei.
“I had to work really hard to stay focused and control the match.”
National singles coach Tey Seu Bock admitted that Chong Wei was “sluggish initially but improved as the match wore on”.
“Zhengming is a top player and a very tough first round opponent. So, it’s normal to see Chong Wei slow off the block,” said Seu Bock.
“Once he got used to the draught and the court, he picked up his game ... that’s what matters.”
Meanwhile, it was also a day of upsets with world No. 2 Chen Long being sent packing by home favourite Tommy Sugiarto 21-11, 21-18. Tommy will take on Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki next.
Fifth seed Kenichi Tago of Japan, sixth seed Hu Yun of Hong Kong and seventh seed Jan O Jorgensen also bit the dust in the first round.
The biggest upset in men’s doubles was the loss of world No. 2 and reigning Olympic silver medallists Mathias Boe-Carsten Morgensen in the men’s doubles.
The Danish pair were well and truly beaten 17-21, 23-25 by Russia’s Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov.

Nicholas Fung posing with the trophy and mock cheque after winning the Asian Development Tour (ADT) title at the PGM-UMW Templer Park Masters Saturday.
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian golfer Nicholas Fung kept his nerves in check over the closing three holes to claim his first Asian Development Tour (ADT) title at the PGM-UMW Templer Park Masters yesterday.
The Sabah-born Nicholas beat American Berry Henson by one stroke despite making bogeys on 16 and 18 for a one-over 73 for a 10-under 278 at the Templer Park Country Club.
Henson carded a 72 after making four straight bogeys from the 14th hole to settle for second place while Malaysian Shaaban Hussin recorded a 73 for third place on 281 in the RM200,000 tournament.
Rising star Michael Tran of Vietnam also shot a 73 to finish a further shot back in fourth.
Talented Filipino Miguel Tabuena posted a 69, the day’s lowest score, to share fifth place with Malaysians Sukree Othman and Zurie Harun on 286.
The bespectacled Nicholas was elated when he finally managed to join the winner’s circle after coming close on several occasions.
The victory also elevated him to the top of the ADT Order of Merit with his US$23,471 earnings.
“This feels great because I’ve been trying to win on the ADT for so long.
“I was feeling nervous on the last hole and I’m fortunate that I made bogey and not worse.
“Berry and I had a good fight but when he had the stretch of bogeys, it gave me more confidence,” said the 23-year-old.
Nicholas, the second Malaysian after Danny Chia to triumph on the ADT this season, is now setting his sights on winning on the Asian Tour.
“I’m getting better because I can win on the ADT. Now, I’m looking forward to win on the Asian Tour.
“There are many international players here so it isn’t easy to win. I tried really hard today,” said Nicholas, who earned his Asian Tour card at the Qualifying School in Thailand earlier this year.
“I want to be an example to other Malaysians. I hope more Malaysians will play on the Asian Tour.
“If I can do it, so can the other players,” said the smiling Nicholas, who won US$11,010 and earned six Official World Golf Ranking points.
Henson, a winner on the Asian Tour and ADT, rued his lapse in concentration on the closing stretch but was gracious in defeat.
“I’m going to forget about everything today. I don’t want to remember about anything on the last few holes. I was mentally exhausted and couldn’t keep it together.
“Fung played brilliantly. He is tough to play against. He doesn’t hit it far but he hits it straight and puts himself in position to score. This win might springboard him to do better on the Asian Tour. I wish him the best of luck,” said the American.

Kelantan retain FA Cup, thanks to Norfarhan's solitary goal

The Kelantan players celebrating with the FA Cup after beating Johor Darul Takzim in the final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil Saturday night.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kelantan showed that money alone cannot buy success when they tamed big spenders Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) 1-0 to retain the FA Cup at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil last night.
Mohd Norfarhan Mohd’s solitary strike in the 15th minute was enough for the Red Warriors to clinch victory and a place in the AFC Cup competition next season.
The spirited Kelantan side were all over an ineffective JDT side from the whistle and should have netted at least three goals in the first half.
JDT got off on the wrong footing right from the start and it was no surprise that coach Fandi Ahmad made all three substitutions in the first half.
National striker Mohd Safee Sali, who was barely in the game was the first to leave as early in the 18th minute, for Argentinian Leonel Nunez.
Their malfunctioning engine room was next. Midfielder Andre Francisco was substituted in the 35th minute by K. Thanaraj while an ineffective national skipper Safiq Rahim was replaced by Ahmed Ezrie Shafizie before the start of the second half.
JDT’s attack, led by two-time MVP Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Nurul Azwan Roya and Nunez failed to breach the tight Kelantan defence marshalled by Obinna Nwaneri and Azizi Matt Rose.

They were fortunate the Kelantan forwards left their scoring boots at home as Dickson Nwakaeme and Mohd Fakri Saarani were having an off-day, otherwise the scoreline would have been very different.
The Kelantan engine room, led by their inspirational skipper Mohd Badhri Radzi, was the mastermind behind the team’s strong offensive play.
It was Badri’s defence splitting pass, which resulted in Mohd Norfarhan’s goal in the 15th minute.
Badri had earlier set up Kelantan’s new signing Mohd Fakri Saarani but his weak attempt was saved by JDT goalkeeper Mohd Al-Hafiz Hamzah in the seventh minute.
At the half-hour mark Badri sent a perfect cross for Dickson but the stocky striker, who was unchallenged in the box, failed to hit the target.
Five minutes later Dickson went through on a solo run after beating two defenders but shot straight to goalkeeper Mohd Al-Hafiz.
The reward for the hard working Badri was earning the accolade of the Man-of-the-Match.
JDT got back into the game towards the tail end of the game but it was a little too late to stop Kelantan from taking the FA Cup back to Kota Baru for the second time in five years.

London: Wanita berusia lewat 30-an dan awal 40-an menghadapi risiko dua kali ganda menghidap kanser.

Amy Search Dimasukkan Ke Institut Jantung Negara?

Amy Search Dimasukkan Ke Institut Jantung Negara?

This my Dr Shaiful Azmi Yahya at IJN. Dia cakap no medicine & u r free to jump around,".

Snowden's options appear to narrow in bid to evade U.S. arrest

WASHINGTON/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Nearly a month after Edward Snowden exposed top secret U.S. surveillance programs, the former spy agency contractor looks no closer to winning asylum to evade prosecution at home - and his options appear to be narrowing.

Stuck in legal limbo in a Moscow airport transit area and facing uncertainty over whether any of the destinations he is said to be contemplating - Ecuador, Venezuela and Cuba - will let him in, Snowden seems to be at the mercy of geopolitical forces beyond his control.
Unseen in public since arriving in Moscow last weekend, much remains unclear about Snowden's overtures to various countries and how they have responded behind the scenes.
Russia may no longer have sufficient reason to continue harbouring Snowden if, as is widely believed, its intelligence services have already questioned him about the classified documents that he has admitted to taking from the National Security Agency.
The leftist government of Ecuador, already sheltering WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at its London embassy, is reviewing Snowden's asylum request, though officials have sent mixed signals, suggesting the process could drag on for weeks.
Venezuela's new president, Nicolas Maduro, has spoken favourably of granting refuge to Snowden but has taken no action, and he may think twice about risking a setback in tentative steps toward post-Chavez rapprochement with Washington.
And even if Ecuador or Venezuela decide to take Snowden, there is no guarantee that communist Cuba, the likely transit point for any flight from Moscow to those South American countries, would let him pass through and further complicate its own thorny relations with the United States.
Adding to Snowden's troubles, the Obama administration, embarrassed by his disclosures on U.S. surveillance programs and his ability to dodge extradition when he fled Hong Kong last Sunday, is bringing heavy pressure to bear on any country that might consider accepting him, diplomats say.
"Thus far, he has chosen his destinations carefully," said Carl Meacham, a foreign policy expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington. "His time, even in those countries, however, may be running out."
Another potential complication is the role of anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, whose alliance with Snowden further politicizes his case. British legal researcher Sarah Harrison, a top WikiLeaks lieutenant and Assange confidante, escorted Snowden on the flight from Hong Kong to Moscow and is believed to have remained with him.
FOCUS ON RUSSIA
Russia remains the chief focus of the diplomatic scramble, and while President Vladimir Putin has clearly delighted in the chance to tweak Washington, there are questions whether he wants a prolonged saga that threatens deeper damage to already-chilly U.S.-Russia relations.
The former NSA contractor's trek took him to Moscow because he had little choice of any other route that would keep him relatively safe from his American pursuers, former Russian intelligence officers and political and security analysts said.
"He has almost nowhere to go. He does not have much of a choice," said Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of the journal Russia in Global Affairs and a member of an influential foreign policy council.
"Considering that he came out with a serious statement that is seen by the United States as treasonous, he needs to lay out an itinerary through countries where he can feel more or less certain that he will not be handed over."
Despite Putin's insistence that Russian intelligence agencies had not been "working with" Snowden, a Russian security service source said they would certainly have interviewed him.
U.S. authorities are already operating on a "worst case" assumption that all of the classified material in Snowden's possession has made its way to one or more adversary intelligence services, U.S. national security sources said.
While top U.S. officials have warned of serious damage to national security interests from Snowden's leaks, Lukyanov suggested that in intelligence terms he was probably not a very valuable prize. "He is not some kind of special agent," he said.
Putin has built his return to the presidency on strident nationalism. If he hands Snowden back to the United States, he could face a backlash from Russians who see the American as a whistle-blowing hero.
"No matter what, we should not give him back. Let him go somewhere, or even stay in Russia - we are a big country and we have room for him as well as (French actor Gerard) Depardieu," said Viktor, a pensioner who was at Sheremetyevo airport on Friday for a vacation flight to Ukraine.
CONFUSION OVER ECUADOR
However, Snowden's protracted stay at the Moscow airport may have more to do with his problems reaching a deal with Ecuador than with any Russian desire to keep the American fugitive from moving on, the Russian security source said.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa has inserted his small Andean nation into the saga by offering asylum to Snowden, whom he has praised for exposing U.S. espionage efforts. However, he may also be trying to fill the void left by the death of Venezuelan socialist President Hugo Chavez - for a decade Washington's most vocal adversary in the region.
While Ecuador seems like Snowden's best bet as a place of refuge, its intentions are unclear.
Assange said earlier that Ecuadorean diplomats in London had issued a temporary travel document intended for Snowden, whose U.S. passport had been revoked. But the Quito government denied this.
In the meantime, Correa has said Ecuador cannot move forward with the asylum request until Snowden is in the country or makes his way to one of its embassies. Correa has indicated he is not planning to arrange transit for Snowden.
Returning to Quito on Friday from a tour of Asia, Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government had been involved in talks with the Russian government about Snowden's fate, but without any result.
For now, Venezuela also was not looking promising for Snowden. Maduro has made clear several times that he would take a positive view of an asylum request, though he said on Thursday that "no one has asked us for humanitarian refuge."
Since taking office in April, Maduro has at times used thunderous, Chavez-style, anti-U.S. rhetoric but he has also expressed interest in better relations with Washington.
Without help from a sympathetic government, Snowden's ability to travel is limited. The increasingly grim predicament may explain why his father on Friday said he is reasonably confident the 30-year-old Snowden would return if certain conditions were met.
Those conditions include not detaining Snowden before trial, not subjecting him to a gag order and letting him choose the location of his trial, according to a letter that Lonnie Snowden's lawyer, Bruce Fein, sent to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

JOHOR BARU: A member of the Johor royal family was among three men sentenced to four years’ jail by a Sessions Court here for assaulting national boxer Muhamad Farkhan Haron.
Tunku Nick Tazuddin Izwan Syah Tunku Qadir, 27, Arif Husin, 35, and Alex Foo Hee Wee, 41, were found guilty of the offence committed in Taman Molek here between 4.30am and 7am on May 6 last year.
They were accused of hurting the 25-year-old boxer with a blunt object and charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code.
Judge Zamri Bakar sentenced all three men to four years’ jail each from the date of conviction.
DPP was Dzul Iswari Mohd Jaafar while Norman Fernandez, Mohd Abdul Kadir, Zamri Idros and Mazri Muhamad represented the three accused.
It was reported that Muhamad Farkhan, a gold medallist at the 2009 SEA Games in Laos, suffered a broken cheekbone and other injuries after being beaten up by a group of men.
Muhamad Farkhan, who took up boxing at the age of 13, was nominated for a National Sports Council award in 2011.
Meanwhile, in a separate court, a lorry driver was sentenced to four years’ jail after he was found guilty of reckless driving that caused a couple’s death here on Jan 17 last year.
Ng Kin Khin, 41, was charged with causing the death of M. Vijayakumar, 34, and his wife S. Hemalatha, 28, at around 9.45am at KM21 of Jalan Johor Baru-Pontian.
Magistrate Farhana Sharif slapped Ng with a fine of RM10,000 in default 10 months’ jail.
Farhana also ordered him to compensate the family of the victims RM30,000 within three months from July 1.
Ng’s lawyer Lom Chon Sin asked the court to grant a stay of appeal for the jail term. This was granted with a bail of RM15,000.
At press time, Ng had neither posted bail nor settled the fine.

Labourer gets death for Dirang's murder

JOHOR BARU: Odd-job worker Muidin Maidin was brought out of court crying and kicking in anger at photographers after he was sentenced to death for the murder of Nurul Nadirah Abdullah, better known as Dirang.
High Court judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman meted out the maximum sentence yesterday after ruling that the prosecution had proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.
But not before raising a string of questions over the circumstances leading to the death of the four-year-old.
The judge drew attention to the combination of factors which played roles in Dirang's death public apathy during the girl's abduction, irresponsible parenting as well as the characteristics of the killer.
“The court visited Flat Delima in Seri Alam where the victim resided and observed there are many residents there.
“I refuse to believe no one saw or heard the victim screaming, struggling, crying and shouting for help as she was dragged away forcefully during the incident which occurred between 11.30am on March 1 last year and midnight the following day,” he said.
Justice Abdul Halim added that the child was lured with a strawberry-flavoured sweet and the whole incident could have been averted had the community taken notice of what was happening around them.
“Maybe people just do not want to get involved, are scared to get involved or just do not care,” he said.
The judge also questioned why a child was allowed to leave her home unattended on the day of the incident.
“A child of that age should have been accompanied by her parents and not given a piece of paper with items scribbled on it, and allowed to walk to a nearby shop to purchase the items on her own,” he said, adding that it was obvious that her parents were irresponsible.
He said Dirang's death had caused a nationwide stir and brought about thousands of questions and regrets.
Justice Abdul Halim described Muidin as “cruel and heartless” for committing such an act.
“I believe the accused has animalistic lust and will do anything to satisfy it,” he said, adding that the accused had suffocated the victim by cupping her mouth and nose tightly, molested her and then eventually burnt her body at a separate location.
“Did you think that you were so smart? Would you have done the same thing if it was your own family member?” questioned Abdul Halim.
He said several factors pointed towards Muidin's guilt and these included his DNA found in the victim's vagina and anus.
“Other reasons include matching soil samples taken from the accused's motorcycle and the crime scene, besides the discovery of a piece of sarong belonging to the accused found on the victim's remains,” he said.

Bukit Aman kesan penipuan sijil insurans

Info: Langkah cegah penipuan insurans

Penonton tanah air bakal disaji kelibat 2 pasukan sama hebat

Kuala Lumpur: Kelantan diramal mampu mempertahankan kejuaraan Piala FA ketika berdepan Johor Darul Takzim (DT) pada final di Stadium Nasional Bukit Jalil, malam ini.
Johor DT sebaliknya, walaupun dibarisi pemain bintang seperti Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Leonel Nunez, Nurul Azwan Roya, Andrezinho dan Safee Sali, terpaksa akur dengan ketiadaan pertahanan kebangsaan, Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak yang digantung perlawanan.

Faktor Mat Yo, Awe

'Serangan Johor DT, Kelantan seimbang'
